After six months of considering everything out there in all price ranges, I decided that the TREK 8.6 DS is the closest thing to perfection in a hybrid bike. The disk brakes with lockout are terrific. The ten cog rear cluster allows you to dial in the exact gearing you want without compromise. The all silver paint job makes it smartest looking bike I've ever seen. I did change out the saddle without giving it a chance to work in as I liked the one on my previous bike ( another TREK). I bought The TREK 8.6 specifically for extended rides on relatively flat, but occasionally rough rail trails throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I recently formed a riders group which has over one hundred members. I will be showing off the bike to them all.
Picked this bike up last Monday (7/14/2014) - it's been a pleasure to ride so far. My only real gripe with it are the stock pedals - which I am, of course, replacing eventually. One side isn't as grippy as the other and leads to your feet having issues staying on the pedal. Otherwise, it's fast, light, and priced well for the build quality. I'd recommend this to anyone!
Its light and the brakes are good. Very unhappy that Tyres got lots of puntures, so needed to change. Saddle was very hard and not easy on the bum. Lower Bracket went after five months and I don't cycle lots of miles.
I mostly mountain bike on my Gary Fisher Marlin and had been also using that bike to commute to/from work (9.5 miles each way). While the Marlin wasn't developed as a commuter bike, it got the job done. Since I can't always get out to single track ride, I was wanting to start putting some distance in during the week, which isn't exactly comfortable on the Marlin. I was looking for a perfect bike for my commute ride, that would allow me to do extended trail/road rides of 40-60 miles, and be able to handle some easier single track rides. The Trek 8.6 DS has been the perfect bike in that regard. I just purchased it last week and took it out this weekend on a 45 mile ride that consisted of paved trails, crushed rock trails, and some simple single track. The bike performed wonderful. One pavement and crushed rock, the ride was buttery smooth with the suspension locked down. I unlocked the suspension for the single track rides and this bike handled those beautifully. I'd be comfortable taking it on a medium course, but nothing further than that. The suspension is great, the shifting is extremely smooth, the ability to lock out the suspension from your shifting position is awesome! I was worried about the saddle for a longer ride, but it actually was fairly comfortable. Also, the grips and great on this bike. I didn't bring my gloves with me and didn't suffer from hand numbness once. With most hybrids, you get a jack of all trades, master of none, but I don't feel like you're really making a sacrifice with this bike. I would highly recommend!
I just started biking early this past spring and got the Ds3 dual sport.Rode all summer.Loved it.I was in my local bike shop saw the new 13 Ds6 and took for test ride.OMG what a diffrence in feel,ride and speed so I bought it.I've had it only 2 days and gone 50 miles so far.Well worth the money!You pay for what you get.
